Gems of PAU Botany: Dr Anita Joshi

         Dr. Anita Joshi

My story:

I joined the portals of PAU as a young girl in the year 1977 aspiring to do an integrated M.Sc (Honours) course. The cherished memories of every single day spent on the university campus, in the company of promising classmates and lively friends putting up with me in the hostel, is still vivid in my mind. I completed my Masters in Botany in 1982.

Since my mom was a college lecturer, it was her heartfelt desire that her daughter too adopts teaching as her profession. It is a good luck and a good merit that immediately after completing my M.Sc in 1982I got my first appointment as lecturer in Botany in S.D. College for Women, Moga (which is my home town).   I worked there for 3 years. It was a great learning experience for me.

I got married to Dr. B. K. Sharma (Dental Surgeon), who was posted at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana at that time. Later, he started his own practice and set up his clinic in Gurdev Nagar. In the year 1986.

Later, due to some family obligations, I had to leave S.D. college. I had a stern desire to uplift my education and to join Ph.D. from P.A.U. I was offered J.R.F by revered Dr. Malik but destiny had something else in store for me. Before I could start my Ph.D., I was selected for a government job and joined Government Science and Research College, Jagraon. I was pleasantly surprised to find Dr. Mohinder Kaur Grewal, my class fellow and friend as my companion. In 1987, I got transferred to Government College for Girls, Ludhiana.

In the year 2000, I got a fellowship for my Ph.D. under the Faculty Development Program scheme of U.G.C. I did my Ph.D. under the able guidance of my mentor Dr. Parmil Singh and learned a lot from her.

My journey at G.C.G. has been very rewarding and fruitful. In the year 2006, Dr. Mohinder Kaur Grewal was also transferred to the same college. We two alumni of P.A.U. both students of Dr.Parmil Singh, worked together towards uplifting the department. We started the honours course at BSc level and then Masters in Botany. We organized state and national level seminars. I was also associated with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell to monitor the growth and development of the institution.

I remained in touch with young, innocent, and tender minds, who gave me immeasurable love and respect. Besides classroom teaching, I got tremendous opportunities to guide my students and to explore their talent and potential, as I was in charge of Environmental Society, Career Counselling and Placement Cell of the college and also of Anti-Drug Society, Red-Cross Society, Rotaract Club, NSS and many more.

I was Member Board of Studies, Punjab University, Chandigarh (Undergraduate, 2 terms). As well as Member Board of Studies, Punjab University, Chandigarh (Post-Graduate, 2 terms).I was elected member of Faculty of Dairy, Animal Husbandry and Agriculture.

My personal  life took a sudden turn when my husband, my lifelong support, my strong pillar of strength, who stood by me through thick and thin, left for his heavenly abode, leaving me alone to carry on this journey of life (Dr.Sahib died of massive heart attack in 2018).

Finally, my professional journey culminated in March 2020 as a H.O.D. Botany department at GCG Ludhiana.

I am blessed with a son Dr. Vivek (MDS prosthodontics). He is happily married to Dr. Mehak (MDS pedodontics and preventive dentistry). Both are doing their own practice in their own clinic at Ludhiana. I have a ten-month old granddaughter Mahira, my darling, who after retirement keeps me busy with her various activities.

I am also associated with an education project Gyan Ghar, which extends support to children from underprivileged families by providing them with uniform, books and taking care of holistic growth of about 50 kids and since now I am retired, I would be devoting more time towards this project. I am immensely pleased to share my experiences with you and fortunate to be in touch with you all at this platform after a gap of so many years. God bless us all my friends.

With kind regards

Dr. Anita Joshi
